Join my institute to ELIXIR Ireland

This page explains how an Irish research institute becomes a member of ELIXIR Ireland

Why join

ELIXIR Ireland is a network of research institutes that together form the Irish Node of ELIXIR. Membership is free: the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS) and Research Ireland pay Ireland's ELIXIR fee, which covers any number of institutes.

  • Take part in ELIXIR Europe. Membership lets your researchers formally join ELIXIR Platforms, Communities and Focus Groups, and apply for ELIXIR calls such as Implementation Studies and Commissioned Services.
  • National coordination. The Node brokers involvement in international projects, supports travel and staff exchange, and connects you to more than 240 research organisations across Europe.
  • National infrastructure work. ELIXIR Ireland is a key stakeholder in many national and international research infrastructure initiatives, such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), EOSC Ireland and the European Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI). Membership gives your institute a direct route into this work.
  • Visibility. Your institute is listed as a member, and your people are visible in national and European infrastructure work.

How to join

  1. Express interest

A group leader (PI) at the institute starts the process in two parts.

First, fill in the expression of interest form. It records your institute's details for the Management Board. We confirm receipt by email and tell you the next steps.

Then email the Head of Node and Node Coordinator. Fill in the details below and your email app opens with the message ready to send.

  2. Management Board approval

We add your application to the agenda of the next Management Board meeting. The Board meets at least once a quarter, and its members vote on each new institute.

  3. Sign the national collaboration agreement

After approval, the ELIXIR Ireland national collaboration agreement is updated to include your institute and signed by all member institutes. Email elixir@ul.ie for a copy.

The agreement must be signed by someone with authority to represent your institute. At current members this is one of:

    • Director of Financial Management
    • Vice President for Research and Innovation, or Vice President Research
    • Associate Director, Innovation Office
    • Director of Research

Your institute also names four contacts:

    • Project manager: the PI leading the application
    • Legal: reviews and approves the agreement update
    • Post-award finance and administration
    • Intellectual property and confidentiality
  4. ELIXIR Europe update

Once everyone has signed, ELIXIR Ireland updates its agreement with ELIXIR Europe to add your institute. You don't need to do anything for this step.

Timing: new institutes are added through an update to the national agreement, which all members sign. These updates run on a biennial cycle (once every two years), so the time to join depends on where you apply in that cycle. We confirm dates when you get in touch.

Northern Ireland and the VIBE network

Institutes in Northern Ireland join ELIXIR through ELIXIR-UK, the UK Node (Queen's University Belfast is currently a member). Membership is free and has its own application process. We work closely with ELIXIR-UK on all-island activities.

Researchers anywhere on the island of Ireland can join VIBE, the national bioinformatics network, whether or not their institute is an ELIXIR member. VIBE runs the national mailing list, the monthly call with ELIXIR Ireland and an annual meeting.
